The inspiration for this playlist stemmed primarily from my mood on Monday 23 September. My weird state of mind craved angry, minor music with attitude and kick. The Drake track (second down) really hit the spot. It's gritty, sexy, eery, but has a realll nice hook. I discovered it today when searching for Drake's new album NWTS to just play on loop (like I have been doing continuously lately) in the office at work through my earphones. Crew Love Part 2 came up in search results and I knew from the first few seconds I was besotted. Doesn't take me long to love a song from the relationship I form with the music- it's a skip or stay kinda choice with me, regardless of whether I have 'given it a chance.' The beat drop at 1:31 in is something else. It's so dirty and satisfying with deep bass. Listen to this and a lot of NTWS through headphones for the real experience- it's more tinny and more disgruntled through regular computer speakers.
Again Grandloves below was a mistake find thanks to Youtube's 'What You Might Like.' I am a mega fan of Purity Ring anyway, so this new addition to my mental musical repertoire was most welcomed and contrasted nicely against the dark hip hop mood I was feeling most of the day. Purity Ring are a very mysterious, eery alternative kind of genre, again dark, but with more electronica than rap. I like the fact there is a lot of musical interest on their songs, as opposed to a vocal focus.
Kendrick's place in this list came about as I was listening to his recently downloaded album on my phone and this song played as I was descending my bus home. 'Collect Calls' is a bonus track from 'Good kid, M.A.A.D City.' It was so spooky and alternative for rich, classic hip hop Kendrick, but I know he has potential for anything. Anything goes with his experimental nature and it works. Swimming pool will always be a favourite track, no matter how much it is played. Both tracks have that deep bass and eery synth music combo going on and I laaaavv it.
The Motion...does exactly what it says on the tin. This one is automatically special, being NWTS bonus track on Drake's new album, and discovering it a while ago actually, before hearing of the album release. The lyrics on this are pretty relatable re: life etc etc and the inclusion of SKTRKT's Sampha is way out there and works really well with the track's minor vibe. His vocal presence always add some edge of 'higher presence,' if that make sense...this subtle but powerful vocal quality I haven't yet heard elsewhere. His and Drake's complimentary vocal parts work well together, as do the tones of their voices. The music is kind of foreboding which I like, with that repetitive music sample throughout. None of that happy sh*t thanks. Favourite lyric: 'I don't have a f*ck to give.'
Bombay, love you always. 'Bad Timing' was a throwback addition to this playlist. It's very angry and loud band, alternative music. You can't beat aggressive, well-composed, tightly-performed music made by a band, that satisfies a frustrated mood. Their album is pretty much spot on with most tracks, I don't not like much from BBC.
