Absolutely original but with very distinctive flavours similar to that of Jessie Ware and Delilah, 'Deal Me Briefly' is catchy, head nodding music. The beat is slow, rhythmic and simple, but has a funk bounce to it- you could say hip hop found its way in... There are lots of different sounds and instruments introduced throughout the track like a T.E.E.D- it really is special and encompasses a variety of musical genres. The repetitive, single chord on the piano adds nice difference to the thick contrapuntal continuous background rhythm, whilst her vocals are contemporary, fresh and somewhat pixie-like. I can sense some Kate Nash vocal influences, combined with Outkast inspiration for the music and production.
Much like many artists are embracing nowadays with new releases, it seems there is a successful synonymy between pop/hip hop/R n B and alternative electronica. It's maturing the sound of what we know as 'pop' music and pushing it towards more originality and individuality- generally more diverse and generally more enjoyable. None of that generic, predictable S Club 7 cheese, that was the norm pop of the 90s. This is fascinating. The track showcases talent from a vocal level through to musical composition and production. I just heard it now for the first time on Radio 1 Extra (july 25th, 13) and have been playing it on loop since.
